The race for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot has intensified as the tournament enters the knockout stage, with several of football’s biggest stars battling for the competition’s top individual scoring honor.
Following the completion of the Round of 32, France captain Kylian Mbappé and Argentina legend Lionel Messi are level at the top of the scoring charts with six goals each. However, Mbappé currently holds first place due to the tournament’s official tie-break criteria.
Mbappé Edges Messi Through Assists
The Golden Boot is not determined solely by the number of goals scored. When players finish level on goals, the first tie-breaker is the number of assists.
