Overview
Indian pacer Harshit Rana has been officially reprimanded for an on-field incident that occurred during India’s victory over South Africa in the first ODI held in Ranchi. The decision comes after match officials determined that his conduct breached the ICC’s guidelines for player behaviour.
Violation of ICC Code of Conduct
Harshit Rana was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, a clause that covers the use of language, gestures, or actions that may disparage or provoke an aggressive response from a dismissed batter. Match referee Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel handled the decision.
What Led to the Sanction
The incident took place in the 22nd over of the South African innings. After dismissing young Proteas batter Dewald Brevis, Rana reportedly made a gesture directed toward the dressing room. Officials deemed the action provocative enough that it could have triggered an aggressive reaction from the batter.
As a consequence, Harshit Rana received one demerit point on his disciplinary record. Since this was his first offence within a 24-month period, the pacer accepted the charge and the sanction without contest.
Match Outcome
Despite the brief controversy, India secured a 17-run victory in the opening ODI, powered by a magnificent century from Virat Kohli. The win sets the tone ahead of the second match of the series, scheduled to be played in Raipur on Wednesday.
