Cyclone Ditva Causes Severe Disruption in Sri Lanka
Visakhapatnam: Cyclone Ditva has unleashed heavy rainfall and strong winds across Sri Lanka, causing significant disruption in affected areas. The cyclone is now steadily moving towards India, raising concerns along the southeastern coastline. As of Friday evening, its center was located 40 km from Trincomalee, 140 km from Batticaloa in Sri Lanka, 270 km from Karaikal, 380 km from Puducherry, and 490 km from Chennai in India. Moving north-northwestwards, the cyclone is expected to approach the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh late Saturday or early Sunday.
IMD Forecast: Intensification Expected
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Ditva is likely to strengthen further before weakening into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday night. Chennai could experience the impact by Monday morning, with the cyclone traveling along the coast before gradually losing strength over the sea. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow official advisories.
Heavy Rains Predicted Over Next Three Days
The Amaravati Meteorological Center has forecast heavy rainfall for parts of the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next three days due to the cyclone’s influence. A red alert has been issued for Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore, Chittoor, Tirupati, and Annamaya districts on Sunday.
Preparedness Measures Underway
Disaster management authorities have mobilized resources in districts likely to be impacted, including Prakasam, Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamaya, Chittoor, and Tirupati. NDRF and SDRF teams have been placed on high alert, ready to carry out relief and rescue operations as needed. Residents are advised to follow safety guidelines and stay indoors during heavy rainfall.
