Born in 1954, Sulakshana Pandit hailed from one of India’s most respected musical families. She was the sister of actress Vijeta Pandit and part of the illustrious music composer duo Jatin-Lalit. Her uncle was the iconic classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj, making music an inseparable part of her identity from childhood.
The Journey from Music to Movies
Sulakshana’s tryst with music began at the tender age of nine. By 1967, she had already stepped into the world of playback singing, lending her mesmerizing voice to several Bollywood melodies. Her talent was soon recognized when she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer (1975) for the song “Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara” from the film Sankalp. Encouraged by her musical success, Sulakshana transitioned to acting, gracing the silver screen in the 1970s and 1980s with performances in films like Uljhan, Sankoch, Apnapan, and Hera Pheri. Her natural charm and emotive acting made her one of the most admired artists of her time.

She never married, and her deep, unfulfilled affection for actor Sanjeev Kumar left a lasting impression on her life.
