Anti-Kannada Stance Sparks Outrage
The announcement of the Rajyotsava award to Rajshree Nagaraj Yadav (Halagekar), president of the Maratha Mandal Education Group, has triggered significant controversy. Critics have labeled the decision “highly condemnable” due to Yadav’s perceived anti-Kannada stance. Ashok Chandaragi, president of the District Kannada Organizations’ Action Committee and a member of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority, called on the government to reconsider, stating that awarding her could undermine the dignity of this prestigious honor.
Letter to Chief Minister and Minister Highlights Concerns
Chandaragi has formally written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister H.K. Patil, emphasizing the negative stance of Maratha Mandal Educational Institution on Kannada language initiatives. “The institution has consistently opposed Kannada Nadu-Nudi-Badi programs, avoids Kannada signage, and neglects Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations,” Chandaragi noted. He described the decision to award Yadav as “shameful” and expressed that it has caused significant anger among Kannadigas, particularly in border regions.
Allegations of Political Favoritism and Rule Violations
Chandaragi further alleged that the award may have been politically motivated, suggesting it was granted to Yadav’s spouse following his membership in the Legislative Council. He also pointed out that the Rajyotsava award guidelines stipulate recipients must be over 60 years of age, a criterion he claims Rajshree Yadav does not meet. “The government should withhold the award to preserve its honor,” Chandaragi urged.
Calls to Recognize True Kannada Contributors
Chandaragi emphasized the presence of numerous deserving individuals in the district who have made notable contributions to Kannada language and education. He cited figures such as B.S. Gavimath, Basavaraja Jagajampi, L.S. Shastri, and senior writers and activists including S.M. Kulkarni, H.B. Kolakara, D.S. Chowgale, and Prof. Y.B. Himmadi, all of whom are over 80 years old. “It is unjust to overlook their contributions while awarding someone who has consistently ignored Kannada initiatives,” he remarked.
