HSBC Announces Leadership Change
HSBC has officially named Ida Liu as the new Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Private Bank, effective immediately. Liu takes over from Gabriel Castello, who served as interim CEO throughout 2025 following the bank’s International Wealth and Premier Banking restructuring in December 2024. Castello will continue his association with HSBC Private Bank, now taking on the role of vice chair to support Liu in her new position.
Strategic Vision for Private Banking
In her new role, Liu is set to concentrate on enhancing HSBC’s engagement with ultra-high net worth (UHNW) clients. She will also prioritize strengthening cross-border connections in key wealth corridors and driving global growth for the Private Bank. HSBC emphasizes that Liu’s leadership is central to expanding the bank’s reach and influence within the international wealth sector.
Professional Background of Ida Liu
Liu joins HSBC from Citi, where she led private banking operations since 2007, culminating in her role as Global Head of Citi Private Bank. Her tenure at Citi is notable for extensive experience in managing global private banking strategies and client relationships. Following her departure, Citi restructured its leadership of private banking, replacing the global head position with four regional heads, including Chris Biotti, a former Bank of America executive, appointed in May.
Looking Ahead
With Liu at the helm, HSBC Private Bank aims to strengthen its competitive position in the global wealth management sector, leveraging her expertise and experience to deepen client relationships and expand cross-border wealth services.
