The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the draft electoral roll for Tamil Nadu on December 19, 2025, following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. This update comes just months before the State is set to hold its Assembly elections next year, making it a significant step in ensuring accurate voter registration.
Background: Special Intensive Revision Across States
On October 27, 2025, the ECI announced the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories, including poll-bound Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, and Puducherry. This phase covered nearly 51 crore voters, while the first phase had already been completed in Bihar.
Tamil Nadu’s Enumeration Phase
In Tamil Nadu, the enumeration period was initially scheduled from November 4 to December 4, 2025. However, the period was extended twice—first until December 11 and then until December 14—to allow maximum participation and ensure accurate records.
Voter Deletions and Updated Roll Figures
At a press briefing in Chennai, Archana Patnaik, the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu, reported that over 97.37 lakh names were removed from the electoral rolls. Reasons for deletion included death, relocation, absenteeism, duplication, and non-submission of SIR forms.
After these deletions, the draft electoral roll now lists 5,43,76,756 voters, comprising 2,66,63,233 men, 2,77,06,332 women, and 7,191 individuals of third gender. This is a decrease of 97,37,831 voters from the previous total of 6,41,14,587 as of October 27, 2025.
