IMD Issues Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Warning for Maharashtra Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised alerts for several districts in Maharashtra in anticipation of Cyclone Shakti. The advisory spans from October 3 to October 7, signaling potential high to moderate cyclone conditions.
Regions Under Alert
The cyclone warning encompasses key areas including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. These regions are expected to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall over the forecast period.
Expected Weather Conditions
Wind speeds are predicted to range between 45 to 55 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 65 kmph, particularly along the North Maharashtra coast from October 3 to 5. The intensity of these winds could escalate depending on the cyclone’s strength. Meanwhile, sea conditions remain hazardous, with rough to very rough seas anticipated along the northern coast until October 5.
Safety Measures for Fishermen and Coastal Residents
Fishermen have been strongly advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to dangerous maritime conditions. Additionally, the IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s interior regions, especially in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada. These heavy rains may cause flooding in low-lying zones of North Konkan as moisture-laden clouds persist.
Government Preparedness and Response
In response to the cyclone alert, the Maharashtra government has mandated district administrations to activate disaster management protocols. Efforts include preparing evacuation plans for vulnerable populations residing in coastal and flood-prone areas, issuing timely public advisories, discouraging sea travel, and ensuring safety measures are in place to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.
