IMD Issues Orange Alert Across Multiple States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert, cautioning citizens of very heavy rainfall sweeping across several regions of Central and South Peninsular India today. The advisory encompasses a wide range of states, warning of significant downpours in Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Intensified Rain Forecast for the Coming Days
According to the IMD’s latest forecast, weather conditions are expected to intensify further in the next three to four days. States like Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Odisha, Konkan, and Goa are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated pockets facing extremely heavy showers.
The persistent wet spell is being attributed to the active monsoon trough and the influx of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, which together are fueling this vigorous monsoonal activity.
Thunderstorms, Lightning, and Gusty Winds Predicted
Beyond rainfall, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, potentially impacting several regions. These include the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rayalaseema, Telangana, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Chhattisgarh. These unstable weather conditions are anticipated to prevail through September 30, heightening the need for vigilance.
Authorities Urge Caution in Vulnerable Areas
In light of the looming threat, authorities have advised residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas to remain alert. Possible consequences include urban flooding, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions.
Fishermen, especially along the eastern coast, have been strongly cautioned against venturing into the sea, as wind speeds are expected to increase, further endangering maritime activity.
Precautionary Measures for a Potentially Hazardous Weekend
With the monsoon season still active, the IMD’s warning underscores the potential for a wet and hazardous weekend across numerous states. Local administrations are actively monitoring river levels and vulnerable zones, with emergency response teams on standby.
Travelers are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, avoid flood-prone areas, and exercise maximum caution while commuting.
