The central government has increased the minimum wages of workers in view of rising inflation. The Center has announced to increase the minimum wage rate to Rs 1,035 per day by revising the dearness allowance (Variable DA) for workers.
The Ministry of Labor has said that the aim of this move of the government is to help workers overcome the rising cost of living. The new wage rates will be effective from October 1, 2024. Earlier, the amendment was made in April, 2024.
How much is the wage now?
Minimum wage rates are determined on the basis of skill levels unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled categories as well as geographical regions A, B, C.
- After the amendment, the minimum wage rate for workers engaged in unskilled jobs such as construction, cleaning, loading and unloading of goods will be Rs 783/day (Rs 20,358/month).
- Whereas for semi-skilled workers the minimum wage rate has been fixed at Rs 868/day or Rs 22,568/month.
- The minimum wage for skilled, clerical and unarmed watchman or guard will be Rs 954/day (Rs 24,804/month).
- The minimum wage rate for highly skilled and armed watchmen will be Rs 1,035/day (Rs 26,910/month).

The Labour Ministry statement said that the Central Government has announced an increase in the minimum wage rates by revising the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) as an important step to support workers, especially those in the unorganised sector.
