Introduction
Utpanna Ekadashi, observed on the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month, is a highly revered day in the Hindu calendar. In 2025, this Ekadashi will fall on 15th November, with the fast being broken on 16th November. This day is believed to remove darkness and negativity from the life of devotees who observe the fast with devotion.
The Legend of Utpanna Ekadashi
According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Vishnu was in Yog Nidra (divine sleep), a demon named Mura attempted to attack him. At that precise moment, Goddess Ekadashi emerged from the Lord’s body and defeated the demon, marking the origin of Utpanna Ekadashi. From that day forward, this day became sacred for devotees, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
The Story in Detail
In the Satyayuga, Mura, a powerful and malevolent demon, defeated all the gods, including Indra, Aditya, Vasu, Vayu, and Agni. Distressed, the gods approached Lord Shiva, who advised them to seek refuge in Lord Vishnu.
Following Shiva’s guidance, the gods visited the Kshirsagar (Ocean of Milk), where Lord Vishnu rested. They prayed to him, praising his omnipotence and asking for protection against the demon:
“O Lord, you are the protector of all. The demons have overpowered us and taken control of heaven. Please save us.”
Lord Vishnu inquired about the demon, and Indra explained:
“Lord, this demon, Mura, is the son of Nadijingha. He has established his power in the city of Chandravati and now rules heaven with great might.”
The Battle with Mura
Determined to end the demon’s tyranny, Lord Vishnu went to Chandravati with the gods. On the battlefield, Mura’s roar terrified the gods, and a fierce battle ensued. Lord Vishnu struck with arrows, but Mura remained unharmed. Even after 10,000 years of combat, the demon continued to resist.
Exhausted, Lord Vishnu retreated to a cave in Badrinath named Hemvati. Seeing the Lord asleep, Mura prepared to attack, but at that moment, a divine goddess emerged from Vishnu’s body. She confronted Mura, defeated him, and restored cosmic balance.
The Birth of Utpanna Ekadashi
Upon awakening, Lord Vishnu praised the goddess, declaring:
“You were born on Ekadashi, and from now on, you will be worshipped as Utpanna Ekadashi. Devotees who observe your fast will receive my blessings.”
Thus, Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as a day of divine intervention, protection, and spiritual purification.
Significance of Observing Utpanna Ekadashi
Devotees believe that observing this fast removes darkness and negativity from one’s life, brings spiritual merit, and earns the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is a time for prayer, fasting, and devotion.
Conclusion
Utpanna Ekadashi is more than a ritual; it is a reminder of the power of divine grace and the victory of righteousness. Observing this Ekadashi with faith is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.
