PM Modi Addresses Summit Virtually
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur, emphasizing the strengthening partnership between India and the Asean nations. Highlighting shared opportunities, he declared that the 21st century belongs jointly to India and Asean, framing it as an era of mutual growth and prosperity.
Shared Vision for the Future
PM Modi remarked, “The 21st century is our century. It is India and Asean’s century.” He expressed confidence that the objectives of the Asean Community Vision 2045 and Viksit Bharat 2047 would pave the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future for humanity.
Deep Historical Ties and Growing Cooperation
The prime minister underscored that India and Asean together represent nearly a quarter of the global population. He emphasized that the bond is not solely geographical but rooted in shared historical experiences and cultural values. Despite global uncertainties, the India-Asean Comprehensive Strategic Partnership continues to advance, acting as a crucial pillar for global stability and sustainable development.
Focus on Inclusivity and Sustainability
This year’s summit theme, “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” aligns with India-Asean joint efforts in digital inclusion, food security, and resilient supply chains. PM Modi reiterated India’s full support for this vision, highlighting the nation’s commitment to shared goals of sustainable development and regional cooperation.
Disaster Response and Maritime Collaboration
The prime minister highlighted India’s consistent support for Asean during crises, noting growing collaboration in disaster response (HADR), maritime security, and the blue economy. He announced 2026 as the “Year of Asean-India Maritime Cooperation,” signaling a stronger focus on maritime partnerships in the coming years.
Acknowledgments and Diplomatic Engagements
PM Modi acknowledged Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos for his role as India’s country coordinator and welcomed East Timor as Asean’s newest member. He also expressed condolences to Thailand following the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit at the age of 93.
Virtual Participation Amid Global Tensions
Earlier in the week, PM Modi confirmed he would attend the summit virtually rather than traveling to Kuala Lumpur. The summit also served as a potential platform for dialogue with US President Donald Trump amid ongoing trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington.
