A Historic Step Toward India’s Green Energy Future
ITANAGAR, 25 Oct: In a significant stride toward India’s sustainable energy goals, NHPC Limited has successfully launched the wet commissioning of Unit-1 (250 MW) of its much-anticipated 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (HEP) on 24 October. This milestone follows the successful mechanical run of the turbine, officially marking the beginning of the project’s operational phase.
Symbol of India’s Renewable Energy Ambition
Speaking at the ceremony, NHPC Chairman Bhupender Gupta hailed the event as more than a mere project milestone. “This achievement symbolizes India’s unstoppable march toward a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant energy future,” he said. Gupta further described the commissioning as “a shining testament to NHPC’s engineering excellence and India’s rising stature in world-class infrastructure development.”
A Collective Effort of Vision and Dedication
Expressing gratitude, Gupta acknowledged the Union Ministry of Power, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, former NHPC leaders, the dedicated Subansiri project team, executing partners, and all stakeholders for their relentless commitment.
Powering the Nation with Renewable Strength
According to an NHPC statement, the company plans to bring three additional 250 MW units online within this year, collectively adding 1,000 MW to the national grid. “Once fully operational, the eight-unit (8 x 250 MW) Subansiri Lower HEP will emerge as India’s leading hydroelectric facility, illuminating millions of homes and strengthening the nation’s energy security,” the release added.
Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, launched in January 2005 at Gerukamukh, on the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border, has endured a long journey marked by perseverance and resilience. Construction faced an eight-year halt (2011–2019) due to public protests in Assam and legal challenges concerning potential downstream environmental impacts. Following the implementation of enhanced mitigation measures, work resumed in October 2019, leading to this momentous phase of achievement.
Presence of Senior Leadership
The commissioning event witnessed the presence of Executive Director and Project Head Rajendra Prasad, NHPC directors, and senior executives from both the corporate headquarters and the project site, celebrating a new dawn in India’s hydroelectric power landscape.
