India’s premier javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, is prioritizing the recovery of his back injury sustained just before the 2025 World Championships. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed on Saturday that Chopra has not yet determined when or where he will begin the new season.
Chopra had competed at the Tokyo World Championships in September 2025 despite the injury but finished eighth with a best throw of 84.03m, well below his season and personal best of 90.23m achieved in May that year.
Rehabilitation Takes Precedence Over Season Opener
AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla emphasized the importance of Chopra’s recovery over rushing into competitions. “He is taking a break and focusing on rehabilitation after two injuries. The opener is secondary,” Sumariwalla stated.
He praised Chopra’s determination at the World Championships, noting, “Despite swelling and injuries, he insisted on competing. He never blamed his performance on the injury. Hats off to him.”
Consistency and Dedication Highlighted
Chopra’s commitment has earned admiration from many in athletics, including Sumariwalla, former AFI president. “There is only one Neeraj Chopra. Many people talk a lot about achievements, but he quietly delivers results,” he said, lauding Chopra’s humility and focus.
In the previous season, Chopra had started in April in South Africa before breaking the 90m mark at the Doha Diamond League in May. In 2024, he had also begun the season at the Doha Diamond League.
Personal Milestones Off the Field
Off the field, Chopra celebrated a personal milestone by marrying former tennis player Himani Mor in a private ceremony earlier in 2025, later sharing moments from the wedding reception on social media.
AIU Testing and Indian Representation
In the latest Registered Testing Pool (RTP) by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), Chopra and fellow javelin thrower Sachin Yadav were the only Indians included. Sumariwalla explained that AIU operates independently and closely monitors athletes likely to qualify for major championships, including the Ultimate Championships in Budapest 2026.
Notably, Yadav outperformed Chopra in Tokyo, finishing fourth with a best throw of 86.27m.
Asian Games Qualification and Domestic Events
The AFI released the qualifying standards for the Asian Games in Japan (September 19–October 4, 2026). Athletes are generally required to compete in state meets or at least two AFI-organized events unless given special permission. The National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar (July 8–12) will be the final major domestic event before the Asian Games.
Sumariwalla indicated that Chopra may be exempted from domestic event requirements, as he participates in international competitions like the Diamond League. “We accommodate our top athletes when they are competing at major global events,” he said, while noting that other athletes must follow the standard selection rules unless granted permission.
Conclusion
Neeraj Chopra’s journey in 2026 is centered on recovery, careful planning, and maintaining his top form for international competitions. His resilience, combined with thoughtful support from the AFI, positions him to return strongly once fully fit.
