Maharashtra is witnessing its first municipal elections since 2017, with polling underway in 29 civic bodies, including major cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Citizens have turned out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right amid tight security arrangements.
Polling Begins Across the State
Voting commenced at 7:30 am on Thursday and will continue until 5:30 pm. Long queues of voters have been reported at polling booths across the state. Apart from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), elections are also being held in civic bodies such as Thane, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Aurangabad, Nashik, Nagpur, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Nanded-Waghala, Malegaon, Latur, Parbhani, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar City, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Mira Bhayandar, Panvel, Chandrapur, Sangli-Mirajpur-Kupwad, Dhule, Ichalkaranji, and Jalna.
Vote Counting and Deployment
When Will Votes Be Counted?
The counting of votes will take place in a phased manner across 23 locations in the city and suburbs on January 16, starting at 10 am.
Civic Workers Deployed
Approximately 64,000 civic workers have been deployed for the counting process, marking a 30.6% increase compared to the 2017 elections.
BMC Elections in Focus
The BMC, India’s wealthiest civic body, has 1,729 candidates contesting 227 seats. Over 20 Returning Officers (ROs) have been assigned to manage the polls. Counting will be conducted in two constituencies at a time to cover all wards efficiently.
Announcement of Results
The State Election Commission (SEC) has confirmed that the results for all municipal corporation elections across Maharashtra will be announced on January 16.
