Chaos at Sylhet Stadium
Khaled Mahmud, former Bangladesh cricket captain and current head coach of Noakhali Express, caused a stir on Thursday when he abruptly left his team’s training session at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to kick off on Friday, with Noakhali Express scheduled to face Chattogram Royals in their season opener.
Rising Frustrations Before the Match
Mahmud’s frustration appeared linked to the team’s management. He left the practice midway, visibly upset, and was accompanied by Noakhali Express pace bowling coach and former Bangladesh fast bowler, Talha. Speaking to reporters, Mahmud did not hold back, stating, “I will not do the BPL under any circumstances. I have never seen this in the BPL.” Talha echoed his sentiments, adding, “I don’t want to work. I don’t know about you, Sujon (Mahmud) bhai, but I am not working.”
Equipment Shortages Spark Controversy
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm, when the team arrived for practice. Reports indicate that a shortage of cricket balls during training was a key reason behind Mahmud’s anger. When he raised the issue with the team owner, the situation escalated due to alleged misbehavior from the owner, prompting Mahmud to walk out.
Temporary Exit, Quick Return
Mahmud and Talha were later seen leaving the ground while speaking angrily on the phone. Their sudden exit drew widespread attention. However, the drama was short-lived. A close friend convinced the duo to return, reminding them that abruptly leaving the team could have long-term career consequences.
Governance Issues in the BPL
This incident comes amid broader management challenges within the BPL. The Bangladesh Cricket Board recently took over ownership of Chattogram Royals, a move aimed at preventing further controversy. BPL chairman Iftekhar Rahman commented on Noakhali Express’ situation: “As far as Noakhali is concerned, what I heard is their plane hasn’t arrived (carrying the balls and other things), but if they had asked the BPL governing council, we would have given them 10 balls. Having said that, this means they are unprofessional.”
Looking Ahead
With the BPL season officially starting, all eyes will now be on Noakhali Express to see how the team performs amid off-field turmoil. The incident underscores the importance of proper planning, equipment management, and communication in professional cricket leagues.
