Lawyer Attempts Shoe Attack on CJI in Court

Posted on October 6, 2025 By Sorit Chaudhary

Unprecedented Chaos in the Apex Court

In a shocking turn of events, the Supreme Court of India witnessed a moment of disruption when a lawyer allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice B.R. Gavai. The courtroom, usually a sanctuary of decorum and legal order, briefly turned tense before order was swiftly restored.

Swift Action Taken by Security

According to eyewitnesses, the lawyer walked up to the courtroom desk, removed his shoe, and appeared to make an attempt to hurl it at the Chief Justice. Fortunately, the court’s security personnel intervened just in time, preventing any harm and immediately escorting the individual out of the courtroom.

CJI Gavai’s Composed Response

Despite the dramatic scene, Chief Justice Gavai remained unfazed. Maintaining his composure, he instructed the court to continue proceedings without interruption. “Ignore all this. We are not affected. These things do not affect me,” he stated calmly, exemplifying the dignity expected from the nation’s top judicial authority.

Identified Lawyer Makes a Provocative Statement

The lawyer in question has been identified as Rakesh Kishore, a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association since 2011. As he was being escorted out, Kishore reportedly exclaimed, “I will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan Dharma,” implying that his outburst was in reaction to perceived religious offense.

Incident Raises Concern for Judicial Safety

The incident grew more serious when it was revealed that the object nearly missed Justice Vinod Chandran, prompting an immediate increase in security at the Supreme Court. Kishore later apologized to Justice Chandran, admitting he had aimed at the CJI.

Outrage from Legal Fraternity

The legal community responded with unified condemnation. The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record (AoR) Association issued a strong statement, demanding that the Supreme Court take suo motu cognizance of the matter and initiate contempt of court proceedings against the lawyer.

Questions Arise Over Motive and Professionalism

A fellow lawyer commented on the gravity of the situation: “This is a very sad incident. We have found that the individual has been a member of our bar since 2011. If this was triggered by a comment in Lord Vishnu’s matters, it still cannot justify such behavior.”

Another legal professional added: “Such acts deeply tarnish the image of the bar and judiciary. If the lawyer acted based on a perceived insult to religious beliefs, he has chosen the worst possible method to express dissent.”
