A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Assam and several parts of Northeast India in the early hours of the morning, causing widespread concern among residents.
Epicentre Located in Morigaon District
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India responsible for monitoring seismic activity, the earthquake occurred at 4:17 am. The epicentre was identified near Assam’s Morigaon district, an area known for seismic vulnerability.
Depth and Geological Significance
The NCS reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface. The epicentre lies along the Kopili fault line, a geologically active zone that has been responsible for several significant earthquakes in the past.
Tremors Felt Across Central Assam
Strong tremors were experienced across multiple parts of central Assam, including Morigaon and surrounding districts. Many residents, startled by the sudden shaking, rushed out of their homes despite cold weather and dense fog, reflecting the intensity of the situation.
No Reports of Casualties or Damage
As of now, authorities have not received any reports of loss of life or damage to property. Officials continue to monitor the situation while urging residents to remain calm and follow safety guidelines.
