Bollywood Star Under Scrutiny
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has found himself at the center of a political storm following remarks he made about Balochistan, drawing widespread criticism in Pakistan. Reports suggest that the Pakistani authorities have reportedly placed the actor under the 4th Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act (1997), a classification typically reserved for individuals suspected of terrorist links.
Being listed under this schedule entails strict monitoring, travel restrictions, and potential legal consequences. Sources indicate that this action followed Salman’s comments at the Joy Forum 2025 in Riyadh, where he shared the stage with fellow actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan to discuss the growing influence of Indian cinema in the Middle East.
The Controversial Statement
During the forum, Salman remarked, “Right now, if you make a Hindi film and release it here (in Saudi Arabia), it will be a superhit. If you make a Tamil, Telugu, or Malayali film, it will do hundreds of crores in business because so many people from other countries have come here. There are people from Balochistan, there are people from Afghanistan, there are people from Pakistan… everyone is working here.”
The distinction he made between Balochistan and Pakistan reportedly provoked strong reactions from Islamabad officials, who considered the statement a challenge to Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
Unexpected Support from Baloch Leaders
Interestingly, Salman’s words resonated positively with some Baloch separatist leaders. Mir Yar Baloch, a prominent advocate for Baloch independence, hailed the actor’s remarks as a symbolic recognition of their struggle. He commented that Salman’s acknowledgment had “brought happiness to six crore Baloch people.”
Mir Yar Baloch further emphasized, “By recognizing Balochistan as distinct, Salman Khan has done what many nations hesitate to do. It’s a powerful act of soft diplomacy that strengthens global awareness of our identity.”
Understanding the Balochistan Issue
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by land area at 46% but home to only 6% of the national population, has historically been a hotspot of political and social unrest. Despite its wealth of natural resources, the province remains economically underdeveloped, with nearly 70% of residents living below the poverty line. Longstanding grievances over alleged exploitation, neglect, and military interventions have fueled separatist sentiments.
Ongoing Reactions and Social Media Buzz
Salman Khan has not yet released an official statement regarding the controversy. Nevertheless, his comment continues to dominate conversations online, highlighting how a single remark can spark intense cross-border debates involving identity, politics, and the intersection of art and diplomacy.
