San Antonio’s South Side is poised for a significant manufacturing resurgence as JCB, the world’s largest privately-owned construction equipment manufacturer, breaks ground on its newest North American facility.
Expansion of JCB Texas Facility: A Major Industrial Milestone
Initially announced as a 500,000-square-foot site located off Palo Alto Road, JCB Texas’s planned facility has recently doubled in size to an impressive 1 million square feet. This expansion reflects the company’s commitment to increasing its manufacturing footprint in the United States.
Richard Fox-Marrs, President and CEO of JCB North America, emphasized Texas’s importance in their operations. “Texas is a big piece of our business anyway. A lot of our machines that are built here will stay here,” he stated, highlighting the state’s strategic advantage for distribution and manufacturing.
Production Plans and Job Opportunities
David Carver, Operations Director for the San Antonio plant, confirmed that JCB Texas is slated to open in October 2026. Upon reaching full operational capacity during the first phase, the facility will manufacture nearly 150 machines daily. The assembly line will primarily produce JCB’s best-selling telehandlers, followed by scissor lifts and various other products.
With growth comes employment, and JCB Texas plans to create approximately 1,500 jobs. The company is searching for a broad range of skill sets, with a particular focus on welding expertise. Carver noted the significance of welding at the facility, from manual techniques to automated and robotic processes. Additionally, the factory will require staff for the automated paint shop, forklift operations, sealing work, assembly roles, and administrative positions.
Commitment to Community and Inclusive Hiring
JCB’s hiring strategy extends beyond technical skills. The company is actively collaborating with local nonprofit organizations, such as Haven, Chrysalis Ministries, and Morgan’s, to ensure a diverse and inclusive workforce that meets San Antonio’s unique employment needs.
Beyond workforce development, JCB is fostering community engagement. Recently, the company partnered with local businesses to participate in the Canstruction competition, supporting the San Antonio Food Bank and encouraging creative talents among future architects.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for San Antonio Manufacturing
JCB Texas’s $500 million facility symbolizes more than just industrial growth—it represents a deepening partnership with the San Antonio community. Company leaders remain dedicated to working hand-in-hand with local organizations as they prepare for a manufacturing surge that will impact San Antonio and the broader global market.
