Incident Sparks Online Attention
Tamil actor Gouri Kishan has garnered widespread acclaim for her strong response to a sexist question about her weight during a press conference for her latest film, Others, in Chennai. The moment, captured on video and shared extensively online, shows Gouri confidently rejecting the inappropriate inquiry, labeling it “irrelevant and disrespectful.”
The Controversial Question
The situation unfolded when a reporter asked Gouri’s co-star, Aditya Madhavan, whether lifting her during a scene was challenging, referring to her “weight.” Gouri immediately intervened, saying in Tamil, “How does my weight concern you? How is that relevant to the film? My weight is my choice—it does not define my talent.”
When the journalist attempted to defend his question, she added, “Every woman has a different body type. Stop normalising body-shaming. I have worked hard on character-driven films. I don’t need your validation.” Even as publicists tried to calm the situation, she maintained, “I have a point to make here, and everyone is silencing me.”
Support from the Film Community
The exchange triggered strong reactions within the Tamil film industry. Director Pa Ranjith condemned the reporter’s behavior on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “@Gourayy more power to you. That female actors still face such indecent questions shows how far Thamizh cinema has yet to go.”
Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar also criticised the incident, remarking, “How much a woman weighs is none of their business. Asking the hero about it? What a shame! Kudos to Gouri for standing her ground.”
Co-Star Speaks Out
Following criticism for remaining silent during the incident, Gouri’s Others co-star Aditya Madhavan addressed the controversy on X: “Hi to all, my silence didn’t mean I approve body-shaming of anyone. I froze because it caught me off guard as it is my debut. I wish I’d stepped in sooner. She didn’t deserve that. No one does. Everyone deserves respect, regardless of who we are. I apologise once again.”
Official Responses
The Chennai Press Club issued a statement, referring to the person involved as a “YouTuber” rather than a journalist. “The Chennai Press Club strongly condemns the behaviour of a YouTuber who posed an inappropriate question to actress Gouri Kishan regarding her body weight during the press meet of the film Others,” the statement read. The body praised Gouri for her assertiveness, saying, “We appreciate actress Gouri Kishan for expressively and courageously voicing her objection even in the face of collective opposition.”
Similarly, the South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam) expressed solidarity with Gouri, stating, “We strongly condemn the incident that happened to our sister yesterday. We will begin the necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.”
Addressing Body-Shaming Misconceptions
Some individuals tried to downplay the incident as “light-hearted,” but Gouri firmly rejected this narrative: “I did not find it funny. It’s about respect.” She further highlighted the gender bias in media questioning, saying, “I haven’t been asked a single question about my character or my preparation — only about my body. Would you ask the same of a male actor?”
Career Highlights and Upcoming Projects
At 26, Gouri Kishan is known for her roles in 96, Karnan, and Ulagammai. Her film Others premiered in theatres on November 7, and she is set to appear in her next project, Love Insurance Kompany, releasing on December 18.
