Pramod Jain Bhaya Wins with Strong Mandate
Anta Election Result: Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya achieved a decisive win in the Anta Assembly by-election, securing 69,571 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contender, Morpal Suman, was the runner-up with 53,959 votes, while independent candidate Naresh Meena trailed closely with 53,800 votes, making the battle for second place particularly intense. The early vote count indicated a tight three-way contest, especially after Naresh Meena’s candidacy disrupted conventional voting patterns. However, momentum gradually swung in favor of Congress, aided by former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s last-minute campaign efforts. All three candidates had expressed confidence in their chances ahead of the results.
Background of the By-Election
The bypoll(Anta Election Result) became necessary after former MLA Kanwar Lal Meena lost his assembly membership following a court conviction related to a 2005 case of alleged assault and damage to government property. In the 2023 Assembly elections, Kanwar Lal Meena of the BJP had initially won the seat, but his membership was later revoked due to the pending criminal case, which carried a prison sentence exceeding two years.
Voter Turnout and Election Management
The Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 79.32% for the by-election. A total of 268 polling stations were set up for 2,27,563 registered voters, with each polling team accompanied by police personnel. Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) units were deployed at sensitive and critical locations to ensure security. Despite initial concerns about potential unrest, the polling process was largely peaceful.
Local Protests and Voter Boycott
While the majority of voters participated, residents of Sakli village (polling station 219) boycotted the election to protest against local administrative neglect. The villagers cited unfinished projects, including road construction to the crematorium, farm pathways, pond beautification, and playground development, as reasons for their boycott.
