Air Force Day: Celebrating 93 Years of Excellence

Posted on October 8, 2025 By Sorit Chaudhary

Reflecting on a Proud Legacy

India’s Air Warriors commemorate their 93rd anniversary today, marking another milestone on the road to their centenary. This occasion invites us to reflect on a year filled with achievements, memories, and progress. Recently, veterans were welcomed at the prestigious Air Force Station Pune, where the future direction of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was showcased by the dedicated men and women in blue. This base holds a special place in many hearts, including mine—it was my first visit as a cadet at the National Defence Academy back in 1975.

Memories from a Cadet’s Perspective

That visit remains vivid in my mind. As Air Force cadets boarded buses to Pune for Camp Greener (now known as Camp Garuda), the Army cadets envied us from their trucks bound for Camp Torna, a rugged outing named after Shivaji’s fort. Their adventure would unfold amidst the hills and valleys, while ours was an immersive experience with operational squadrons. The excitement was palpable as we young aspirants saw, touched, and even sat inside the cockpit of the legendary MiG-21 fighter jet for the first time.

The MiG-21: Icon of an Era

The MiG-21, with its sleek aluminium frame, sharp nose cone, and thunderous afterburners, was the star of the 1971 war. It captured media attention and the imagination of a generation. Fast forward to 2025, and the IAF recently bid a poignant farewell to this legendary aircraft in Chandigarh. Beyond its combat role, the MiG-21 trained countless fighter pilots who would go on to fly advanced aircraft, ensuring the protection of Indian skies.

A Gathering of Generations

The Pune Air Force Station event was rich with symbolism. Attendees included a retired IAF chief, considered young compared to a veteran air warrior commissioned fifteen years earlier. A large screen showcased the IAF’s historic evolution—from the biplane Tiger Moth and Dakota aircraft to modern marvels like the Rafale fighter jets, C-17 Globemasters, and Apache helicopters. A lively rock band, formed by young officers, energized the crowd, uniting all generations through music, culminating in the famous anthem “Yeh Aasmaan Hai Mera.”

Honoring the Silent Air Warriors

The highlight of the evening was the heartfelt rendition of the Air Force song. For the air warriors, it was second nature; for many veteran ladies in attendance, tears and shining eyes revealed the deep sacrifices behind the scenes. These women have been the silent pillars, nurturing families and managing homes while their loved ones served the nation in the skies and on the ground. Their quiet strength is deserving of immense respect and recognition.

Looking Ahead with Pride

As India’s Air Warriors continue their mission, we salute their unwavering dedication and bravery. Here’s wishing them many more successful missions and safe returns as they persist in their noble endeavor to “Touch the Sky with Glory!”
