Nokia N900 Mobile Review
by Ajay Partap Singh
Hey guys! Today we are going to write our first product review that will be on n900.
OS-MAEMO5
It is a geek phone and is not meant for regular use. It runs on maemo 5 which is supposed the best nokia had come out with lately. The user interface is not the best you can find. There is the Android, IOS4 and the palm webOS. But it is better in some ways. It does True multi tasking. Meaning you can switch between windows at any time. It has the Mozilla firefox with full adobe flash support that enables you to see the website the way it was supposed to be seen.
But to really use the phone to its maximum capability you might have to read the manual because there places where you will start wondering “how to go back?” as there are no icons or descriptions and some places. But it is attractive looking than the previous symbian s60. Maemo 5 is based on linux which is open souce and you can find a lot of apps. You may not be able to find as many apps as the app store. But there are many apps that you can download by visiting ovi store or going to http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/.
LOOKS
N900 is also not as nice looking as the other smartphones. It comes in black color only. It is smaller in width and length than the Iphone but it is almost double the thickness. It is 18mm thick and weighs 181 grams. The physical buttons on the phone consist of camera key, volume rocker (camera zoom keys), lock key and a full QWERTY keboard.
HARDWARE
Display
So now lets move to the hardware as you all know that a nice high-end smart phone should have a high-end hardware. Nokia n900 comes with 3.5in resistive touch screen that has the resolution of 800x480 and upto 65,000 colors. It comes with 4 customizable desktops.
It has ambient light detector, brightness control and accelerometer. But the phone mostly remains in the landscape mode. Portrait mode only works for the phone app. So the only use of accelerometer will be during games when you can use it to steer your vehicle or the ball.
Speed- Processor, RAM and storage
It has a ARM 600 mhz processor and 256MB of ram along with 768MB of virtual memory. It also has 3d graphics acceleration with the support for openGL ES 2.0. The phone has 32GB inbuilt memory and supports a 16GB MicroSD memory card. It maybe able to support a 32GB memory card but we haven’t tested that.
Connectivity
It is an International device. You can use it in any country. It has Bluetooth 2.1, WLAN IEEE 802.11 b/g and 3G. It has a GSM talktime of 6.3 hours and standby time of 278 hours. You can continuously surf the web for 8 hours when using wifi. You can also play music for 24.5 hours and videos for 5.6 hours.
GPS
The phone has inbuilt A-GPS and comes with free walk and drive navigation through Nokia Ovi Maps. Ovi maps is not as good as the google maps and ovi maps is slow. So you might also want to consider it.
Camera
The phone comes with inbuilt 5 megapixel camera with dual led flash. The camera has sliding lens cover to protect it from dust and scratches. The camera also features Autofocus with 2-way capture key and can take a pic in 4:3 or 16:9 ratios. The camera can take videos at a resolution of up to 800x480 pixels. The phone also has a secondary camera for video calling.
Other
One other big feature this phone has it the FM transmitter which lets you listen to songs anywhere wirelessly.
The phone is better than many phones hardware wise. But its up to you to decide if the OS is good. If you are a first time smartphone buyer you may want to consider other phones also. But if you read the manual you will like the phone
