HIV AIDS Awareness Education and Information Program

By Aakriti Bansal

17th January 2009: AIDS is one of the deadliest diseases in the world, today. Many people are dying each day, and more and more are contracting AIDS every minute. Children are being orphaned because the people are losing sight of what is important in this world. While the spreading of AIDS has risen greater than before; the funding for AIDS has decreased.

The history of AIDS is somewhat unknown but scientists have created a theory of the possible developments of AIDS. Recent research indicates that HIV probably first jumped chimpanzees to humans as early as 1675.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The virus was discovered in France in 1983 and in the USA in 1984.

This disease is spread through irresponsible sexual behavior, for instance: having sex without protection. It also can be spread through if blood of non-infected person comes in contact with an infected person’s blood. Since this disease came into existence, researchers have not come with cure for it, and lives of people have become victim of it as mentioned by Center for Disease Control.

An estimated 5.3 million people, including 6,00,000 children under age 15 became infected with the virus that causes AIDS last year (according to The World Health Organisation.) For the first time, the number of the new infections in sub-Saharan Africa stabilized, but that was offset by increase in mobility and deaths in the region.

AIDS is a deadly disease that deteriorates the immune system. There are two groups of HIV,
HIV-1:- that occurs throughout the world
HIV-2:- that mainly occurs in Africa.

The HIV virus enters the white blood cells and takes over the reproductive system of that cell and uses the system to reproduce itself. The white blood cell dies and now HIV cells infect other white blood cells and repeat the process. If you have become infected with the AIDS disease, you may not have any symptoms of the disease for the next ten years. The AIDS disease makes the serious condition harder for your body to control or get rid of because of the loss of the white blood cells in your body. The most common causes of death for the people with AIDS are Pneumonia and Kaposi sarcoma, which affects 70% of the infected people.

AIDS is transmitted in three ways: Intimate sexual contact is the most common. While direct contact with the infected blood and transaction to babies from infected mother's fetus will also cause the disease. Although some speculation, you cannot receive disease from air, food, water or insects. AIDS is a life and death issue. To have AIDS disease is a sentence of slow but inevitable death. Currently, there is no cure or vaccine for this disease. There are drugs that have been proven effective in slowing the spread of this disease. We know enough about how the infection is transmitted to protect ourselves from it. But too few people are hearing the AIDS message. Perhaps many simply don't like or don't want to believe what they hear, preferring to think that AIDS “cannot happen to them”. Like other communicable diseases, AIDS can strike anyone. AIDS doesn't just occur in certain social groups. We must all protect ourselves from this infection and learn about it in time to take effective precaution. Given the right measures, no one needs to get AIDS. Now is the time to take charge against the AIDS disease.

People must remember that the most reliable person in charge of preventing you from getting AIDS is YOURSELF!!!
